The Central Bank of the United Arab Emirates (CBUAE) has officially issued a new AED 100 polymer banknote, which entered circulation on March 24, 2025. This launch is part of the UAE’s Third Issuance of national currency, aimed at modernizing the country’s banknotes with improved security, durability, and sustainability.

What’s New in the AED 100 Banknote?
The new AED 100 banknote introduces several key changes:

Material:
Made of polymer instead of traditional cotton paper.

Polymer banknotes are more durable, lasting 2 to 3 times longer.

They are also environmentally friendly, being fully recyclable.

Enhanced Security Features:
To combat counterfeiting and ensure the highest level of security, the banknote features:

SPARK Flow® DIMENSIONS – a color-shifting dynamic security thread that changes as the note is tilted.

KINEGRAM COLORS® – a multi-colored 3D security foil that creates vivid visual effects.

Raised symbols in Braille – to help people who are blind or visually impaired recognize the note’s value.

Updated Design:
The design maintains the iconic portrait of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan on the front.

The Palm Jumeirah – one of Dubai’s most iconic landmarks – remains featured on the reverse.

The new version uses sharper images, brighter colors, and enhanced visual clarity while keeping the cultural themes of the previous note.

Are the Old AED 100 Banknotes Still Valid?
Yes! Both the new polymer AED 100 and the older paper-based versions remain legal tender and will circulate alongside each other. There is no need to exchange your old notes, as they will continue to be accepted for all types of transactions across the UAE.

Why This Change?
The introduction of polymer banknotes reflects the UAE’s goals of innovation, sustainability, and public safety. Key reasons for the switch include:

Better security to prevent fraud.

Increased lifespan, which reduces replacement costs.

Environmental responsibility, aligning with the UAE’s sustainability vision.

Summary:
The new AED 100 polymer note is already in circulation as of March 24, 2025.

It will circulate together with older AED 100 notes.

Offers advanced security, modern design, and greater durability.

Supports the UAE’s green economy and modernization efforts.

As the Central Bank continues to update other denominations in the coming years, this step highlights the UAE’s leadership in combining technology, culture, and sustainability in its currency.
