How Bulgaria’s historic Danube city is preparing for a new chapter in regional economic development.
Silistra has been shaped by centuries of trade, movement and cultural exchange. Known in Roman times as Durostorum, the Bulgarian city occupied a strategically important position along the Danube, connecting territories and commercial routes across Europe. Today, this historic geographical advantage is becoming part of a new economic vision as the municipality explores the development of a modern industrial park designed to attract businesses, strengthen logistics and create new employment opportunities.

Under the administration of Mayor Aleksandar Sabanov, the municipality proposes transforming 37.8 hectares at the former Siloma industrial site into a development combining manufacturing, logistics and supporting services. The initiative represents an attempt to reposition Silistra within the contemporary European business landscape, offering companies an opportunity to consider a location outside the traditional industrial centres of the continent. Its success, however, will depend on the practical conditions available to investors, including transport access, utilities, workforce qualifications and the reliability of municipal services.

The Danube remains an important element of the city's economic identity. Its geographical position offers potential advantages for regional connectivity, although proximity to the river alone does not guarantee competitive freight operations. Businesses will need clear information about existing transport infrastructure, access to logistics terminals, customs procedures and connections with road networks. The distinction between established facilities and proposed improvements will be essential in assessing the project's investment potential.

Silistra's ambition reflects a broader European trend in which smaller regional cities are seeking to attract manufacturing and logistics companies by combining geographical advantages with targeted infrastructure investment. The Roman history of Durostorum provides a compelling narrative, but the future of the industrial park will ultimately be determined by measurable results: companies establishing operations, sustainable employment and infrastructure delivered according to clearly defined milestones.

For Silistra, the challenge is to transform its historic position as a centre of exchange into a credible proposition for modern industry.
